Walking the Talk, Beyond Our Doors
Whether gathered in person or in spirit, we are committed to seeking justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with our God. This commitment is especially evident in the many ways we serve the wider community:
The Welcome Table: This year-round Saturday lunch draws 100-150 people to the grounds of a church in White Center for a free, nutritious meal and caring conversation. Our Homelessness Task Force commits church members and friends to providing one meal a month. Contact the church office to receive a link every month to the website where you may sign up to contribute a casserole, fruit, or other component of the meal. While at the Welcome Table, individuals and families also benefit from donations of food to take home, warm clothing, and toiletries; we make the congregation aware of these additional ways to serve.
Camp Second Chance: This cluster of 50 tiny homes is on city land in the Highland Park neighborhood in West Seattle. The camp is known for its success in preparing people for permanent housing by providing stability, resources, and encouragement in a clean-and-sober environment. Residents and staff welcome having our congregation walk beside them by giving a hand, either as individuals or as households. Through our Homelessness Task Force, church representatives stay in touch with camp management and residents, enabling us to publish opportunities to serve. Church volunteers helped build many tiny homes when construction took place at the camp; now volunteers build in a spacious warehouse in the SoDo district; find details at soundfoundationsnw.org.
Refugee Assistance: Our Immigration Task Force aids individuals and families who have come to this country seeking a better, safer life. The UCC has recognized Fauntleroy as an Immigrant Welcoming Church. We have assisted a refugee from Iran and several families from Peru seeking asylum under the immigration laws. We have aided in providing housing, legal, education, health and other assistance. Contact the church office if you have a particular interest in this ministry.
Anti-Racism: Our Anti-Racism Task Force is just forming. Contact the church office if you would like to help define objectives, project priorities, and educational opportunities of this new ministry.
Special Appeals: We invite you to participate in special appeals throughout the year, such as winter clothing for homeless men coming to the Welcome Table or school supplies for low-income students in West Seattle. Watch for announcements in the weekly newsletter and other church media.
